Irish Handcrafted Willow Rattle Gifted to Princess Charlotte on her 1st Birthday

Princess Charlotte 1 year old

Gifts from around the world have been arriving for Princess Charlotte whose first birthday was on 2nd May. Among these were a silver rattle from President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico, a white gold rattle with diamonds, rubies and sapphires from The Natural Sapphire Company and other precious and expensive presents. One wonders whether the little Princess will have any interest in some of items, which will probably have to be kept locked away for safe keeping.

Willow woven rattle by Ciaran Hogan

More likely to be a hit with Charlotte is the simple willow handmade rattle made by Irish craftsman Ciaran Hogan. This is something that can be given to Charlotte to play with and to enjoy. It contains seven stones, representing the seven deadly sins. By shaking the rattle, she will banish the sins, or so the story goes.

Ciaran Hogan Basket-weaver

The rattle was originally presented to Prince Charles by the maker Ciaran Hogan on his visit to Galway in May 2015, and now, he, in turn, has presented it to his granddaughter on the occasion of her first birthday. Hogan, on hearing of the birth of Prince Charles' granddaughter, thought it would make a great gift and a souvenir of his visit to Galway. Hogan says that the rattle has a simple design, and he made it in about fifteen minutes.

The Gathering

The Gathering Ireland 2013 is a tourism-led initiative in Ireland. It aims to mobilise the Irish diaspora to return to Ireland during 2013 to be part of specially organised local gatherings and events during the year. It is a government supported initiative driven primarily by Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, and Tourism Ireland. The concept relies on grassroots initiatives of private individuals, and non-governmental organisations. The Gathering is not a single event but provides an umbrella framework for varied activities throughout 2013, from family reunions and clan gatherings to sports fixtures. While the initiative is primarily directed at the Irish diaspora, and those with other links to the country, the organisers hope the experience for the general tourist will also be enhanced.
